First day of Western Civ
Today was our first day in the second semester. Which also means the first day in Western Civilization. I walked into Mr. Schick's class with everyone else and two new people in the class! He went over his policies for the new kids and how we have blogs that we need to post to every time that we have class. Then after that he talked about the large textbooks that were on our desks. I was very happy that he said that we were allowed to leave those books in class, so we didn't have to carry them back an forth everyday. Then he told us to read and take notes on some pages. Here is the information that I gathered:
- Athens formed a democracy
- Alexander (the great Greek) spread Greek culture throughout Asia
- 1200 BC was the start of the Trojan War
- Greece was not a united country, it was a collection of many separate islands
- Minoans created an elegant civilization
- Consisted mainly of mountains and a peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea
- 2,000 islands
- The sea shaped greek civilization
- Used seas for travel and trade
- The land covered 3/4 of Greece
These next notes are from the powerpoint that Mr. Schick put on the board. We did not get through the full powerpoint, so here are the start of my notes:
- The Greeks thought that the world's great civilizations are all located on water
- Great civilizations/river key
- Mesopotamia---> Tigris and Euphrates rivers
- Egypt---> Nile River
- India---> Indus River
- China---> Huang He River
- Three very important seas
- Ionian Sea
- Adriatic Sea
- Aegean Sea
- Mediterranean Sea
- it means the middle of the earth
