Second day of class

Today in class we continued to take notes from pages 118-126. This is the information that I gathered:

  • mountains run mainly from northwest to southeast
  • the mountains divided the land and influenced the political life
  • they had small independent communities
  • dirt paths were their roads
  • the land was very stony
  • little fertile farmland or freshwater was available for irrigation
  • Greece was unable to support a large population
  • they had a very varying climate
  • men spent most of their time at outdoor public events
  • Mycenaeans migrated in 2000 BC
    • located in Southern Greece
    • had very strong rulers who dominated Greece from 1600-1100BC
    • learned the importance of seaborne trade
  • Minoans influenced the Mycenaeans
  • Trojan War
    • it happened in 1200 BC
    • Mycenaeans fought a 10 year war against Troy
    • Greek army destroyed Troy because a Trojan prince took the wife of a Greek King
  • Dorians migrated to Greece
    • less advanced than the Mycenaeans
  • They learned from oral tradition
    • Their greatest story teller was Homer
  • Greeks developed many myths
Then, we went back to the powerpoint and took notes on that. Here is the information that I gathered from it:
  • Be able to identify the following on a map
    • Aegean Sea
    • Ionian Sea
    • Adriatic Sea
    • Pelopenesus
    • Athens
    • Sparta
    • Crete
    • Asia Minor
    • Macedonia
  • Greece is a mountainous peninsula
  • mountains cover three fourths of the land
  • approximately 2000 islands in the Ionian and Aegean Sea
  • this combination shaped Greece's culture
  • they had many skilled sailors and shipbuilders, also farmers, metal workers, weavers and potters
  • they had very poor and very limited natural resources
    • this made them trade with other countries
  • it was difficult to unite the ancient Greeks due to the terrain
  • they developed small independent communities (city-states)
    • thats who they were loyal to
  • here is the size comparison
    • North Carolina
      • 53,818 sq miles
    • Greece
      • 50,949 sq miles
    • Pennsylvania
      • 46,056 sq miles
        • this shows that Greece was small in size but they had a huge influence
