Today in class we took notes on a video that we watched during class. Here is the information that I gathered.

- 508 BC in Athens the ordinary people turned on their rulers and demanded freedom of their suppressions
- Cleisthenes
- he had been brought up from earth to be a ruler
- look upon the people
- in his life and the history of Greece and civilization, he would see that the people should have freedom and should be able to govern themselves
- he set his fellow greeks on the path to democracy
- born around 570 BC
- he was taught that he was an aristocrat
- 6th century BC, aristocrats controlled everything that happened
- Athens was a city state
- reading and writing was a minor skill
- life expectancy was less than 15 years
- they didn't care much for medicine, and didn't have the education to help the sick
- no one was equal
- their people turned against their selves
- aristocrats held power against the rest of the citizens/population
- stayed on the verge of building a great empire
- divided into city states
- each fiercely independent
- death was nothing
- ancient tales and myths had a huge roll in their lives
- everyone recited these tales to whoever would pay
- these stories shaped him from his earliest days
- heroes are terrific achievers
- determined to seiz victory at all costs
- Big change in the middle of the 6th century
- someone seized land, a tyrant
- one day a noble man rode in to Athens, and he wanted the rule of Athens, he had the protection of a goddess
- had olympic games
