plato's allegory of the cave
Today in class we went through a video. And the following information is the notes that I took during class.
- Plato's allegory of the cave
- a story, poem, or picture that can contain a modern meaning or a moral, or political lesson
- facing wall
- hands tied up
- fire behind them
- only can see shadows
- so this is all they know
- they identify things they are seeing but aren't actually seeing it
- first time going outside
- it was very disorienting
- only one was released at first
- examined mostly shadows, because thats all he knew
- he was enlightened by reality
- the sun whose light is the ultimate source of everything seen
- his friends thought the journey was stupid
- most people just aren't comfortable in their ignorance but hostile to anyone who points it out
- Plato spends most time discouraging Athenian democracy while promoting the rule of Philosopher Kings
- Allegory can be read in many different ways
- things in the physical world are flawed reflections of ideal forms
- cave= the nature of reality itself
- the ideal forms exist in the mind of the creator
- grouping things under abstract terms
- things outside the cave are any more real than the shadows
