Mini Halloween and Test Review

Today, in class we went over our test that we took late last week. But first, we ate candy. A couple people in the class brought in candy to have our own little Halloween. It was pretty nice however I certainly ate way too much candy especially for it only being the second period of the day. Then we continued on with our test. The class actually did very well with an 87.5 average. This was surprising because in our class group chat everyone was saying how they failed and didn’t do well, and actually we all did very well. I got a 92 on the test, which I am proud of! I only got two multiple choice questions wrong. They were kind of silly and pointless, especially because we never went over them in class. I am totally okay with that too. Also, I only got two points off of my essay. I don’t really know why I got points off, it was just filled with red underlining, so I don’t know if that is good or bad. After we finally finished we discussed push and pull factors which

Measuring Population

Today in class we went over Net Migration rate. This is the difference between the number of person entering and leaving a country during a year. An excess of persons entering the country is called net immigration. This is written as a positive number. an example is Canada and 5.65 migrants per 1,000 population. On the other hand, an excess of persons leaving the country is net emigration. This is written as a positive number. An example is Mexico has -1.68 migrants per 1,000 population. We also went over measuring population. The crude birth rate is the number of births per 1,000 of the population. The crude death rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 of the population. Then, the rate of natural increase is produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate. This gives us the annual growth rate in percentage form, for a country or a region.

Fun Facts about Population

Today was Ashley's day to bring in food, and she brought us candy! It was very good! Then Mr. Schick started class right away which was weird and different because we always socialize and talk about our day with him for at least ten minutes. What we did recognize is that we had Mr. Schick's class the first day of the school year and the last day of the quarter. We thought that that was pretty cool! Anyways, today's class was about population. Right now there are about 7.5 billion people in the wold. We looked at a website that showed us the population growing every moment. It was really cool but I thought that it was really stressful because the numbers were rising so fast and it was weird to think about how many people in the word that there really are. Then we wet to a chart on the population and how long it takes for us to reach a billion more people. It went from 10,000+ years to 123, to 33, to 14, to 12. And for the past couple years it has stayed at 12 years to reach

Testing day

Today in class we had a test. I was stressing about it the whole day but otherwise I was feeling fine, then the moment I walked in to Mr. Schick's room my head started to pound. And it still hurts really badly and I don't know why. I could barely focus during the test, I had to keep taking a second to refocus. It was so weird because I never get headaches, and this one was so bothersome. Anyways, I don't exactly know why I was stressing for the test today because it really wasn't that hard. Of course, there were some questions that were super confusing, but when I focused I was able to figure it out. If i broke down the question, and reworded it in my head it made sense. Then, I thought that the essay was pretty easy as well. However, I thought my essay was pretty good, except for the fact that my hand constantly kept cramping up so my handwriting was just a little sloppy.....

Review and Question Making

Today in class we had a review for our test tomorrow. Mr. Schick asked up to come up with three different questions that either will be put on the test or just general information that we should know. He gave us ten minutes to look over our notes and form questions, that aren't too basic, but aren't to difficult and precise. The following information is the things that Mr. Schick advised us to study and know. Who proposed a worldwide system of time zones in 1879?  Sir Sanford Fleming What does GPS stand for?  Global Positioning System  Need to know specific information about place and region What is the science and art of map making called?  Cartography How many degrees latitude is the equator?  zero degrees latitude  What is the difference between a mercator map and a peters map? Mercator map is the original map which most people are familiar with however it does not have correct proportions. For example, Greenland is certainly not the size of Africa. Pe
Today, we had many shadows in the class, and Faith brought in cookies. We decided to make a food schedule, because honestly the cookies really hit the spot.  While Kelsie, Maddie and I were in the back of the room creating our food schedule, in calendar form, our shadows introduced themselves. I had a shadow on Friday, her name is Hannah, and she goes to C. Milton Wright. We used to play lacrosse when we were younger! For her fun fact, she said that she had cancer when she was really young. Everyone in class was so surprised by this, especially me! I would have never guessed that she did or ever had it. Anyways, finally we started class and reviewed questions that could possibly be on an upcoming test, and information that we should definitely know. First is that every place on earth takes up space. Next, geographers use maps as their primary tool not only for identifying points on the earths surface but also as means to compare phoneme between different places. The art and science in

Should we care about climate change?

Today in class we started off with a discussion that had to do why Mr. Schick wasn't in class today. He told us that he had to put his dog down. This made everyone very sad, especially Maddie Remeto and Kelsie Barnard who started to cry. Mr. Schick said that him and his wife had made the final decision to put him down on Monday, and so they spent the whole day with Michael and then put him a better place. We talked about many different things with dogs and all animals for half of the class. I told my story about my fishes and how they mysteriously lived for six years and Ellie told the story about when her chickens got tae by foxes, and she watched it all happen. Then, finally we got started on class and it was about if we should or should not be concerned by climate change. Apparently, some people think that global warming isn't true, and think that it is just a phase that the world is going through. Then we started talking about how we could reduce the amount of pollution tha

Global to Local Notes

Today, Mr. Schick wasn't here so he assigned us to complete things on his blog. He asked us to take notes about his blog, find two other definitions of Globalization, and then answer some of the questions at the end. Below, are the notes that I took, definitions for globalization and answers to the questions. At local scales they see neighborhoods, and are able to identify unique features At global scales they see broad patterns that are encompassing the world "Think global, act local"  All scales are important in geography  The appropriate scale depends on the specific subject  Geography matters because it can explain human actions  At a global scale you are able to see where the population rapidly grows and specific regions where people live  Globalization is a force or process that involves the entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope Globalization scale is an increasingly important part of globalization  Globalization means that the

Global to Local, and Oil Catastrophes and much more

Today in class we discussed the saying "Think global and act local." I interpret this saying as doing something little that will have a bigger impact on the future. Also, if everyone in the world does something small, and we work together by all contributing we can make the world a better place. I shared with the class what I thought about this quote. Mr. Schick highly agreed with my answered and supported it and then went into greater detail about it. Then, he put important information up on the board about it, and I took the following notes on it. "Geographers think about scale at many levels, from local to global. At a local scale they tend to see and find unique features. Then at a global scale geographers tend to see broad patterns." After that conversation came to a close, somehow we got into the amount of oil there is in the world, and how much the United States has. We figured out from cia.gov that the United States imports the most amount of oil in the worl

Maps and Fun Facts!

Today in class we finished our maps. On one side of the map it is the "Robinson Projection of the World Map." This map looks more like the world, and all the land wraps around. I find this map very confusing because I am used to having North and South America all the right on the left, with Asia and Africa in the middle and Australia all alone on on the right. My description is just like the Mercator Projection of World. I like using this map more because this is what I am more used to. Anyways, here are the twenty five countries that have the largest populations in the world. China is first with 1,379,302,771 people. Then it goes to India, United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Ethiopia, Philippines, Egypt, Vietnam, Congo, Iran, Turkey, Germany, Thailand, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Burma and lastly South Africa with a population of 5,481,552. I went to the bottom of this list and found out that the smallest population in a

CIA Website, and Pop QUiz

Today, we had a pop quiz. All of us were quite angry about this. It was hard because usually I study for everything, but of course, I couldn't study for this. The second question was pretty confusing and misleading. It said between the two poles, but which way is between? Exactly, so misleading. I asked Mr. Schick to clarify for me, but of course he didn't. I was left in confusion. Then after I struggled and turned in my quiz, Jamie asked the same question as me. But guess what?!! He answered her question but not mine. I immediately became very mad, thinking that I lost a point because he wasn't in the mood to answer my question. Then after that, he said that we were going to be able to get onto our computers in less than ten minutes. Due to my saltiness, I looked at the clock. Mr. Schick was on his computer showing us the CIA website, which is pretty cool, I will admit that. However, Mr Schick lied. Ten minutes passed, and then another ten minutes and then another five min

Geographic Coordinate System

Today in class we discussed Geographic Coordinate System. This is a coordinate system used in geography that enable every location on Earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. Also known as latitude and longitude. The geographic grid is a system of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern of earths surface. Meridians are arcs drawn between the North and South Poles. This is also known as Longitude. These Meridians intersect at the North and South poles, and are not equal distances from each other. These values range from 0 degrees (prime meridian) to 180 degrees east or west longitude. Parallels are arcs drawn parallel to the equator and at right angles to meridians. Each is numbered according to a system known as latitude. These values range from 0 degrees to 90 degrees North or South. These lines are the same distance from each other. A one degree difference is divided into 60 minutes, and then those 60 minutes are divided into 60 seconds. 23.5 degrees North (Tropi

Skipped Class!

Today, I wasn't in class because I had a dentist appointment. This also caused me to miss advisory, but no worries I am just getting started to cook something for them tomorrow.

New Uniforms and Politically Grouped States

Today in class we discussed for a long time about PSAT's. Mr. Schick was telling us how his daughter had difficulty trying to accomplish this test on her own. I took it into consideration when he said that his daughter got help and her score on this test started to improve. This test is on your own knowledge but that doesn't mean that you can't use other people's knowledge to help you be successful. His daughter got a tutor specifically for the SAT's and her scores began to increase. I thought about this and how it helped her, instead of doing it all solo. Then from that conversation somehow our uniforms got brought up. Then Mr. Schick told us that he thinks we should wear flight suits and how much more convenient they would be instead of uniforms. We had a long conversation about this and our thoughts about it. My final thought about this is that it has potential to be good but it needs a little bit of help. After half of the class went by then we finally got worki

Regions and the Cultural Landscape

Today in class we talked about regions and cultural landscape. This is a sense of place that humans possess that may apply to a larger area of earth rather than just a specific place on earth. The definition of a region is an area of Earth defined by one or more distinctive characteristics. There are a few different types of regions. First, it can range from a small point on earth to being very big. Second, several neighboring countries that share important features are classified as regions. This means that places near each other have more things in common with each other than places across the globe from each other. Also, there are many localities within a country. Next, we went over the defintion of cultural landscape. Cultural landscape means a combination of both physical and human characteristics that uniquely define places and areas. Another definition for this is an area fashioned from nature by a cultural group. Next, we went over some maps that included the votes for republic
