video and discussion

Today in class I brought in cookies. My mom made them and I though that they were very good. Then class continued and we began to watch the Han Rosling video again, and only made it about ten seconds through before Mr. Schick stopped it and started a discussion. Honestly, I can't even remember how the conversation started, and how it got to the point that it got to. However, we began talking about North Korea. We were saying how they now have the capability to actually hit the United States with a bomb. We all proposed that why don't we just completely eliminate them, because we could easily bomb their whole entire country and wipe them out. Then Mr. Schick said that it would create more enemies for us, and we certainly do not want to get attacked, and also we have never been a country to start a war. We also went into the conversation of why North Korea would want to bomb us in the first place. We didn't understand it because we really have done nothing to them, except try

TEDed

Today in class we watched a video that went over population pyramids. First, it started off saying that the Russia is the country that has the most amount of land, but Nigeria has a much larger population than Russia. We came to the conclusion that Nigeria is a developing nation because they have such high birth rates compared to Russia, which is a developed nation. Also, the video said that this statistic won't last for long because over a couple years Nigeria will have a steady birth rate and their population will not be as high. This happens because no country is just developed right away. It goes through different stages. Just like in the industrial field. There is a preindustrial stage, a industrial stage, and a postindustrial stage. Then once you go through all three stages then you are an industrialized nation or country. The United States is a great example of an industrialized nation.

going over test

Today in class we got our test back. Everyone except for one person got an A. I thought that this test was really easy, and I guess so did the rest of the class. As Mr. Schick started to passed out the tests the bell was constantly ringing. Then we went over the test. I made two dumb mistakes, which could have gotten me a one hundred, but its all good. I also did the extra credit over the weekend. I did both parts of it, so I got ten extra credit points. Then with my ninety seven on my test now I have a 99.73 in that class. So I am happy with that. However, only two people in our class donated money to Kiva. It was me and Chase, and I am kind of disappointed with that because I wanted to get the highest class so we could get another five points. But its all good.

Kiva.org

Today in class, some people still had to finish their test. Mr. Schick started the class anyways. Today he was talking about a website called kiva.org. This website is where there are millions of people looking to get micro-funds. I found this website very interesting. Mr. Schick said that he was willing to give us five extra credit points if we did research on the website, and found two people that we found interesting due to what they needed money for or their backstory. He also said that he would be willing to give us five extra points if we were actually going to donate money to someone. So, I am planning on getting at least ten extra credit points, and I hope that the rest of the people in my class also plan on donating because if we have the highest percentage of people that donate money in all of his classes then we will be able to get another five extra points. So it is a the opportunity to get fifteen extra credit overall which I am very excited about to boost my grade even mo

Test day

Today, when I say that it was test day, I really mean test day. I had five tests today, that were simply mind numbing to studying for last night. However, I think that I did very good on Mr. Schick's test. Mrs. Collins was our sub, and we began with the timed fifteen minutes of research on cia.gov. I finished in a very short amount of time because I was able to quickly navigate around the website. I felt very confident on the first page. Then, I closed my computer, and I began to work on the rest of the test. Good thing I studied! I felt really confident in all my answers except for the population pyramid questions. I say this because the wording on some of them were very confusing, and it was playing games with my mind. However, I still completed the test feeling confident about my answers, and how I did. I finished the test with a plethora of time left, so I went to the bathroom and I am now writing my blog.

Review for test tomorrow

Today in class Mr. Schick was not in the best of the moods. I say this because Sophia brought in donuts, and we all went to go and get them. Then, Mr. Schick demanded all of us to sit down, and then he threatened to give us detentions. Mr. Schick said that he has given 4 detentions, in the past day. Suddenly, everyone in our class got very quite, and we all starting to pay extra attention and we were all being extra respectful. We certainly did not want to get on his bad side. After Mr. Schick went over what he needed to, we all got our donuts and settled in for our class. Tomorrow is our test. So we had a mini review day. However, it did not consist much of reviewing. It was more going over what types of questions that are going to be on the test and he was explaining it because he won't be in class tomorrow, because he is going to see his daughter in Boston. We learned that there are six different pages to this test. At first I thought that it was six pages of front and back, but

More and more projects

Today in class, we continued to present our projects. First, Val, Faith, Maddie and Elli's group presented. The two countries that they compared is Qatar and Haiti. They had many troubles with starting their project, as in getting Mr. Schick able to access it. I learned from their project that Haiti is a developing nation so they have a very high birth rate. Qatar has a really weird population pyramid because the male population goes up as the years increase because they work in the oil rig. This is a manly job, and most of the men work here, and die working at this job. This then decreases the male population due to the high death rate of this. Then, Kelsie and I went. I think that we did a really good job presenting our project. We knew a lot of information about our project because we put a lot of time and effort into it, with a lot of research.

Projects, projects, and more projects

Today Faith brought in Oreo's, and they hit the spot because Kate forgot to bring in her bagels for advisory. Then, Owen Ellie and Ashley got to make up their quiz, the second one. So I went to the bathroom in this time. The bathroom was so warm compared to Mr. Schick's room, I almost thought of staying in there for the rest of the class. However, I got back to class just as Mr. Schick was deciding on the day we were going to have our test. We figured out that our break starts next week I think and this made me really happy. We are planned to have our test on Friday, which I am completely fine with! So then, the class continued and people started to present their projects. Ben and Chase went first, and they had a few flaws in their work. Then we went to a website called Charity Navigator and we saw how trustworthy these charities actually are. Next, Frankie went. His project was good and you could tell that he put a lot of effort into it. Then Owen went, and he had really good

Quiz and Project

Today in class we all complained. Currently everyone in the class has a C or lower, which is just amazing. Very surprisingly, Mr. Schick gave us the quiz again. I have to say that was petty nice of him, because I have a good memory with the order of things, and letters. I think I got a 100% on that quiz which would be amazing, and help my grade. Then, we moved onto our projects that we worked on last night and in class yesterday. Jamie, Giovanna, Sophie and Sydney's group went first. They did a very good job. And we even got to the points on the project to double. So now its out of fifty points. They got a well deserved one hundred percent. Then Vlad's group went next. They compared Qatar, and Chad. I learned that Qatar doesn't even follow any of the shapes for the population pyramids. They have a very large number of males in their mid-twenties until their mid-forties. These pyramids were very different from each other so it was good to make comparisons from. They also had

quiz and grade boost!

Today in class Mr. Schick gave us a pop quiz. It was ten questions and two points each. However, we only had ten seconds to answer each question. This was definitely one of the most stressful things ever! Then after the class realized that we all failed Mr. Schick gave us an assignment to complete in the rest of class and for homework. He let us chose who we wanted to work with, which was a bonus. Kelsie and I got to work right away. Below, I put Kelsie's and my work. Honors Human Geography Population Pyramid Project Why does Egypt have a higher birth rate than Spain? Egypt has a high birth rate because it is a developing nation and its life expectancy has been slightly increasing. There has not been a substantial increase in female labor participation during this past period in Egypt, so more women are available to have children. Also, Egypt is a developing country so the economy will need more young people to work the labor jobs that older people can’t. Is Spain a

Population Pyramids

Today in class we continued our discussion with Population Pyramids. However, today's discussion was about the shape of the pyramid. There are three different shapes used to describe the shape of the pyramids. The three shapes are a Christmas Tree, a Cup and a Box. The Christmas Tree shape shows a developing nation. This also shows that the growth rates are slow and high birth rates. Lastly, there is a short life expectancy. Examples are Namibia and Bangladesh. The box represents a developed nation and low infant mortality rate. This also shows slow population growth and a long life expectancy. An example of this is the United States. The cup represents a developed nation, and a low birth rate. The cup also shows a shrinking population and a long life expectancy. An example of the cup pyramid is Italy and Japan.

Cake and Population Pyramids

Today in class Owen brought in cake. Chocolate cake. This was a big deal. Owen forgot to bring in food on his day last week, so he brought extra today. He decided to back us a cake, which was an amazing idea. Except for the fact that we did not think about how we were going to serve the cake, or even eat it. Thanks to Ellie, she ran and got plates from somewhere, and I went to the cafeteria to go and get knives. I completely forgot to get forks, so Ellie went and got them a little later. It was a good thing that Mr. Schick was going over what we learned from the past three classes. This gave us time to cut the cake and eat it. By the time everyone got themselves a piece of cake, Mr. Schick was just moving onto new information. Perfect timing! What we learned today had to do with population, but more specifically population pyramids. We use population pyramids to analyze growth or decay of fertility, mortality, and migration in cities. He showed us a bar graph of population, separated i

TFR and questions

Today we had a later class because we had mass. Anyways, today in class we went over the Total Fertility Rate, which is also known as TFR. This is the average children who are born per woman. The average is 2.1 children per woman. If you were to have more than 2.1 children the population would increase, and if you were to have less than 2.1 children (one child) the population would or decrease. In the United States our TFR is less than 2.1. This means that our population is slowly decreasing. Then we looked at some other statistics and it showed how some places have really high TFR but also have a really high death rate so their population stays right in the middle and there isn't much change. Then we went on cia.gov and were looking up questions that Mr. Schick projected on the board. We only got through three of the questions and they were confusing to look up and find, they used a little more effort than I expected. Then finally at 11:40 the bell rang and we got to go to lunch,
